Born in 1962, Markus Stein is a trained nurse and gained a degree as an information specialist (Dipl.-Dok. (FH)) in Biomedical Sciences.
He gained experience working in the Clinical Research department of a large pharmaceutical company for three years. Subsequently, over a period of 10 years he held management posts in the hospital clinic of Ludwigshafen, including as head of Inpatient Accounts and Medical Records. He was head of a Coding Group there even before the introduction of DRGs in 2003. For over six years he has been head of Patient Management and Patient Services at the ATOS and ETHIANUM private hospital clinics in Heidelberg, where his responsibilities include IT Design, corporate financial controlling and medical financial controlling, including calculation in-house per diem rates, service accounts and staff management. For the last two years he has been project manager with medule, focusing on small business intelligence systems and mobile applications for medical records.
He is the long-serving chairman of the German Association of Medical Information Specialists (DVMD), a founding member of the specialist publication mdi for Medical Documentation and Medical Informatics (published by DVMD and BVMI) and remains on its editorial team. As of 2012 he has been a member of the presidium of GMDS.
