Dr. Günter Steyer

After obtaining his PhD, Dr. Steyer took over the position of Head of Laboratory Automation at the present University Teaching Hospital of Dresden and has been working in the field of IT applications in the healthcare sector ever since.

In 1981 he obtained certification as an expert in “bio-mathematics and medical informatics“ at the Academy for Continuing Medical Education, Berlin and received his habilitation in this field at the University of Rostock in 1982. This was followed in 1987 by the qualification to lecture in the field of medical informatics at the Humboldt University, Berlin and the Facultas docenti at the University of Rostock in 1991.

Günter Steyer headed the “automated Information processing“ department of the Society for Biomedical Technology and Information Processing (BMTI) in the former GDR, was a founder member of the Berlin TELEMED, initiated and headed the Telemedicine Work Group of GMDS, is a founder member of the IHE initiative in Germany and was member of the board of the HL7 user group from 2004 to 2005. From 1991 to 2007 he was Chairman of the Berlin/Brandenburg branch of the German Medical Informatics Professional Association (BVMI) e. V.. From 2003 to 2004 he was vice-president and from 2004 to 2007 president of BVMI e. V.. From 1996 to 2006 he was head of the  programme committee and from 2006 to 2009 of the national steering committee of TELEMED and was then co-partner of TELEMED Org. GbR until 2011. From 2007 to 2011 he was 1st Chairman of the German Association of Health Telematics (DGG) e. V.

Günter Steyer was head of Laboratory Systems, head of department and of the Institute for Medical Informatics, product manager for Clinical Information Systems at AVM Schmelter in Telgte and at GSD in Berlin. From 1997 until his retirement in 2006 he was director of Healthcare Central Europe at SeeBeyond, a system integration company which in April 2006 became part of Sun Microsystems. Since then he has been an eHealth consultant and as of 2009 has supervised the Working Group on ICT Consulting for the Health Industry of BVMI.

He has published more than 320 articles and lectures as main author or co-author.
